Swiss typography maestro gives talk
Renowned typographer Jost Hochuli gives a talk next Thursday (November 27) at the St Bride Foundation, titled Systematic Book Design?
Hochuli explores the process of book design, particularly that which follows a fixed plan before the work begins. However, even in a consciously rational process, the unconscious-feelings rather than reason-plays a part, often a significant one. Hochuli explores the impact of his own emotions, irrationality and unconscious on his work, paying particular attention to the points where the irrational has helped to solve 'rational' problems.
The talk is followed by a Q&A with Hochuli on book design and typography; he'll also sign copies of his new book, Detail in Typography.
The talk begins at 7pm and costs £7 on the door.
Jost Hochuli is a Swiss typographer and graphic designer who studied under Adrian Frutiger and graduated in 1959. Since then he has practised as a freelance graphic designer, eventually specializing in book design. In 1979 he co-founded the co-operatively run publishing company VGS Verlagsgemeinschaft St.Gallen, for which much of his book design work has been done. He has taught at the schools at Zurich and then St Gallen since 1967. As writer and editor, his books include Book design in Switzerland (1993), Designing books (1996), and a major monograph on his work: Jost Hochuli: Printed matter, mainly books (2002). An English-language edition of his Detail in typography was published earlier this year. He has edited and designed the annually published 'Typotron' series of booklets (1983-98) and the Edition 'Ostschweiz' (from 2000).
